A federal judge in San Francisco ruled that two veterans groups can proceed with a class-action lawsuit claiming that the Department of Veterans Affairs violated veterans' civil rights by delaying and denying benefits for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan who suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Veterans for Common Sense and Veterans United for Truth in July 2007 filed the suit against the VA. VA currently has a backlog of more than 600,000 unresolved claims, and a decision on a claim can take up to 12 years to be processed through appeals.
