The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Staff Sgt. Gregory V. Pennington, 36, of Glade Spring, Va., died June 21 in Baghdad, Iraq, when his camp came under mortar attack. Pennington was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

The incident is under investigation.
